Kettlewell, John

(1653–95)

   Devotional Writer.

   Kettlewell was born in Yorkshire and was educated at the University of Oxford. He served the parish of Coleshill in Warwickshire, but was a determined opponent of the Protestant Revolution of 1689. In consequence he was deprived of his living and settled in London. There he attempted to set up a fund for other deprived clergy who had shared in his stand, but he was prevented by the government. He was the author of several devotional manuals including The Measure of Christian Obedience, The Practical Believer which went through many editions and The Companion for the Persecuted, which was meant to comfort others in his predicament.
